Activity: Zero Tolerance Discussion

If you are taking this class with a learning group (online or face-to-face), brainstorm with your peers and post your answers on your group's bulletin board. If you are taking this course on your own, write your thoughts in your portfolio journal.

The Zero Tolerance Act is not without it's own controversy.

Reflect upon the following ideas and discuss them with others or write down your thoughts in your portfolio.

  • "The 1994 act requires expulsion for one calendar year of any student bringing a weapon to school, though local regulations must allow for a case-by-case modification of the one-year expulsion by the "chief administrative officer" of the school."
  • "The act's definition of weapons includes guns, bombs, grenades, rockets, and missiles. However, it allows states to broaden their definitions, and many jurisdictions include knives and other "weapons" within their zero tolerance policies."
  • Studies of zero tolerance policies show that they are often applied more vigorously against minority students.
